Hoagies and grinders, hoagies and TRIVIA QUIZzes!

Today is National Submarine-Grinder-Hoagie-Hero Day. Anybody know the regional breakdown of these names? I remember once I heard a radio guy in NJ trying to guess which turnpike exit a certain town was near, and one thing he asked was "Hoagie or grinder?" to determine whether it was south or north Jersey.

Today is Leif Erickson Day, celebrating his discovery of North America in the year 1000.

On this day in 1917, Clarence Saunders patented the self-service grocery store. He called his store Piggly Wiggly. No word, however, on the first person to ever call it "Hoggly Woggly."

On this day in 1996, a 5-day exhibit of the world’s largest pair of jeans closed in Beijing. The Lee jeans, made in Kansas, were the height of a 10-story building.

Here's a good question: How many of the 40,000 TV commercials the average American child sees each year is for junk food?

Good luck :)

it's a toss-up between that and crap-ass plastic toys...or disneyland vacations you can earn if you'd only get off your ass and get that high interest rate credit card.

i guess i'll venture about 60%.

being from North Jersey, we called them subs. I think hoagie was a south jersey thing. I hope nobody really calls them grinders - that's just gross!

as for the % of junk food commercials - I'll go with 37.2%.

Thanks for clearing up SandwichGate, Laine. Silly South Jerseans!

So the answer is acutally about 80%! The obesity rate has tripled among 6-12 year olds in the past 30 years.

Jody, I'm guessing that Disney products are another 8%, and then the plastic toy industry gets the other 12% ;)

Sounds like all these kids could use TiVo!

this is a little late, but i'll add that in connecticut, they are all called grinders, and hoagie is definitely a south jersey/philly thing :)
