Well, I'm not sure if this is really an explanation, but I think it's "daylight come."

So, back to George Washington for a second - wouldn't he want to keep at least ONE of his dogs around the house? Martha must've been allergic or something ...

Kim, that's a good question. That song probably raises quite a few questions...maybe there's a DVD with commentary that would answer them :)

Yes it seems like it's "day light come", when George Washington retired from hunting, why did he gave away all of his dogs. Its not required to give up his dogs for retiring form hunting.
