On this day in 1997, world chess champ Garry Kasparov lost his first-ever multi-game match to IBM's chess computer Deep Blue, the first time a computer had defeated a world-champion player. Then IBM went on to create the Thinkpad, which was pretty much only useful as a flat surface to put your chess board on :)

hmm, ok my first answer will be California since they're big. and perhaps have the most colleges and research institutes? my back up answer is hawaii because i knew a girl in college who'd dad worked on one there.

How about New Mexico? They ought to have a few at Los Alamos, plus a bunch out in the desert so they can see the aliens coming....
oh aliens. yeah that's a good point. i didn't think that through quite enough.
Hmm, I never considered that they would be for alien spotting! The answer is Arizona (apparently in Tucson)...go figure!
