Today is Wright Brothers Day. They made their first flights on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, N.C. Orville flew an experimental plane, the Wright Flyer, 120 feet in 12 seconds; Wilbur flew 852 feet in 59 seconds. They made two other short flights with the Flyer before an ocean gust lifted and badly damaged the plane.

Today is Clean Air Day, marking the 1967 passage of the U.S. Clean Air Act, a sweeping set of laws to protect the nation from air pollution. It was the first law to place pollution controls on the auto industry.

Today is Simpsons Day. The popular animated cartoon family debuted as a weekly sitcom on December 17, 1989. Creator of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie is Matt Groening.


On this day in 1849, Thomas and William Bowler sold the first "bowler" hat in London. William Coke ordered it for hunting.

On this day in 1979, Stan Barrett broke the sound barrier, reaching 739.6 miles an hour on land at Edward Air Force Base, California. His rocket vehicle was powered by a 48-thousand horsepower engine and a sidewinder missile.

On this day in 1993, Fox Television outbid CBS for the rights to televise games of the National Football Conference.
