I'm going to guess that it was "Roots," on ABC. If that's right it was pretty edgy stuff for the '70s!
I think I need to start checking this page earlier in the day, so that I can send a more substantive post that "I'll go with what they said"! But, I do think Jon is right on this one. Sadly I've never actually seen Roots, though.

i'll third the "roots" answer. it was great, but my favorite miniseries from the 80's is still The Thornbirds.
