On this day in 1978, Gary Deathbridge set a record by racing the 36 miles from Nanaimo to Vancouver, British Columbia, in one hour 29 minutes 40 seconds in a 6-horse-power outboard bathtub.

On this day in 2003, An extreme sports fanatic became the first man to cross the English Channel in an unpowered flight. Felix Baumgartner jumped from a plane 30,000 feet above Dover and glided 22 miles at speeds up to 220 miles an hour in a 10-minute flight. He landed by parachute near Calais, France.

I Tawt I Taw a TRIVIA QUIZ!!!

The 3-day Lumberjack World Championships begin today in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Today is Form A Company Quartet Day, a day to find co-workers who like to sing. Hm, somehow I don't see many people grabbing 3 co-workers and breaking into song at the office, but maybe that's just my office!

On this day in 1940, Bugs Bunny debuted in the movie cartoon A Wild Hare. Artist Bob Clampett created Bugs after seeing actor Clark Gable munching a carrot in the movie It Happened One Night.

On this day in 2001, a new law in North Carolina banned swearing in the presence of dead bodies. The law, intended to foster respect for the dead and bereaved, also sets out how corpses should be transported. The law was prompted after some bodies were carried in the back of an open pick-up truck. Oh, I'm so proud to be from NC!

Today is National Drive-Through Day, marking the founding of America's first drive-through hamburger chain, Jack-in-the-Box, in 1951.

Today is Pioneer Day in Utah, marking Brigham Young's arrival in the Salt Lake Valley on this date in 1847.

On this day in 1969,
the Apollo 11 astronauts, including the first men to set foot on the moon, splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean.

On this day in 2002,
a fleet of six bicycle ambulances, complete with flashing blue lights, sirens and heart-starting defibrillators, hit the streets of London. The two-wheeled ambulances were sent to emergency calls downtown at the same time as their four-wheel counterparts. Trials revealed the bicycles were likely to arrive first in 88 percent of cases. In a third of calls, the bicycle medic was also able to treat the patient at the scene and cancel the full ambulance response.

On this day in 1997, Josh the Wonder Dog died of cancer at age 16 in Riviera Beach, Maryland. Josh, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s most petted dog, had been petted 478-thousand times, appearing at hundreds of schools, the 1992 Republican Convention, and as Grand Marshall of the 1997 Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans.

The 42-year-old smashed the previous record of 35.5 hours, traveling on the Epedition GeForce train at Germany's Holiday Park in Hassloch. He was allowed 15 minute breaks every eight hours. Doctors accompanied him on the 75 miles per hour, 203-foot high ride.

On this day in 1942, the owner of the Green Parrot bar in New York City, Max Geller, was murdered. The crime was solved because the victim's pet parrot kept repeating the killer's name. The parrot even testified in court.

On this day in 2006, Debbie Phillips of Charleston, West Virginia, reported to police someone had been in her house and cleaned it. Nothing was missing. Police didn't worry about it much, but it really bugged Debbie. A month-long investigation revealed a neighbor across the street with a house key hidden in a similar spot outside had hired a cleaning service. They went to the wrong house.

Today is Reading Guilt Day, a day to actually start reading an entire book you only read the Cliff Notes version of in college. Hmm, I guess that means I'll finally have to read Billy Budd...

Rollin', rollin', rollin' on a TRIVIA QUIZ!

Today is Pavement Day, marking completion of the first concrete-paved street on this date in 1892 in Bellefontaine, Ohio. So I guess they were the first town to pave paradise :)

Today is also Disney Animation Appreciation Day, a time to remember all your favorite Disney movies, like possibly "The Fox and The Hound," released on this date in 1981. Four years in the making, this Disney production required 360,000 drawings.

On this day in 1991, Millie Bush, America's First Dog, became a millionaire as royalties from her book about a dog's life in the White House reached $1.1-million. Millie gave the money to First Lady Barbara Bush's family literacy foundation. Millie died in May, 1997.

On this day in 2004, in his weekly radio address, President Bush said legalizing gay marriage would redefine the most fundamental institution of civilization, and that a constitutional amendment was needed to protect traditional marriage. I think the most surprising thing for me about this was that W has a weekly radio address!
