On this day in 1996, Isaac Hayes, who co-wrote the Stax classic "Soul Man," sent a protest letter to presidential candidate Bob Dole requesting Dole stop using his song, which his supporters had changed to "I'm A Dole Man."

Interstate trivia time: The U.S. Interstate system numbers its highways. Most Americans know that odd-numbered interstates run mostly north-south, while even-numbered interstates run mostly east west. Fewer people may realize that there is also a geographic ordering of the numbers. On this day in 1907, Seattle teenagers Claude Ryan and Jim Casey started a local delivery service called the American Messenger Company. Later, the name was changed to United Parcel Service: UPS.

Today is Weather Cliché Day, marking this date in 1897 when editor Charles Dudley Warner of the Hartford Courant published the sentence, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." Many incorrectly attribute the quotation to Warner's close friend, Mark Twain.

On this day in 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly non-stop across the U.S., traveling from Los Angeles to Newark, New Jersey, in just over 19 hours. Of course, that was just 7 hours in the air, and 12 hours of ground delays at LAX :)

On this day in 2000, Richard Hatch was the winning castaway on the CBS TV show, "Survivor." Hatch won $1 million for his stay on the island of Pulau Tida in the South China Sea.


On this day in 2003, a 47-year-old German man lost his driver's license after failing to perform any of the required actions on an alcohol test. The test in Koblenz was noteworthy because the man's dog, a West Highland white terrier, executed all the commands perfectly, including a 360-degree turn as his master staggered and fell.

I must apologize for the unexplained blog hiatus! I was a tad busy here at work and didn't have a chance to update. Now back to the blogging!

Today is Cadillac Day. The first Cadillac was built on this day in 1902.

Today is Hawaii Day. Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state on this date in 1959. Welcome aboard, Hawaii!

On this day in 1887, Phillies’ pitcher Dan Casey struck out in the 9th inning of a game against the New York Giants. The event inspired Ernest L. Thayer to write the classic poem "Casey at the Bat."

On this day in 1987, the movie Dirty Dancing opened throughout North America. It starred Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, and Jerry Orbach. This movie was filmed in NC!


On this day in 1997, children on bicycles in Granite City, Illinois, cornered and captured a 5-year-old stray dog nicknamed Cookie that had run loose for at least five days with a bubblegum jar stuck on her head. Cookie apparently had tried to drink rain water out of the jar. The Humane Society saw to it that Cookie fully recovered.

The truck driver didn't notice for 25 to 30 miles. Police said it "was quite a mess." Workers removed as much dough as they could, but some stuck to the asphalt.
